7 Signs Your Child May Need To Be Evaluated For Diabetes

Here’s what you need to know about type 1 diabetes for your children.

1. INCREASED THIRST

It’s good for your child to want water, but if they are seeking out water or drinks more than normal, then you should look into that. Excessive thirst can be linked to diabetes mellitus or diabetes insipidus, where the body can’t concentrate the urine enough and take out the nutrients it needs. With either of these conditions, the child ends up passing liquids faster than normal. If your child is acting like their thirst can’t be quenched, this is a sign of increased or excessive thirst, and they may not be getting the nutrients they need.

2. FREQUENT URINATION (OR BED-WETTING IN A TOILET-TRAINED CHILD)

If your child is urinating a lot, wetting the bed (especially if they are potty trained), or leaking from their diapers, this could be related to diabetes. It can be hard to tell how much is too much urine, as children pee more frequently but usually far less than adults. Urination problems might be more strongly linked to diabetes insipidus. So, if your child is peeing a lot and it is pale, colorless, odorless, and they are wetting the bed more than normal, get this looked at.
